"Amazing Woman" Salon Day
will Transform Homeless Women into Job Candidates.
WHO: Twenty-five women from InnVision, Second
Start, Emergency Housing Consortium, and City Team Ministries Heritage Home, who are
making the transition from Welfare-to-Work, are the beneficiaries of this special event.
WHAT: They will spend the day becoming
transformed. These "Amazing Women" who have faced many struggles in their lives,
will leave the salon with new hairstyles, complete makeovers, beauty supplies, clothes,
and tips for dressing for success.
WHEN: Sunday November 7, 1999 8:30 am 3:00 pm
WHERE: Le Chic Beauty Salon, located at 106
Royce Street in Los Gatos
WHY: Danica Finitz, owner of Le Chic, is
coordinating this event. She and other hairdressers and make-up artists will be
volunteering their time and expertise to serve these women and prepare them for their new
jobs. Danica and Le Chic Salon have received tremendous support from the surrounding
community. She says, "They are all responding well. No one has said
no," to Danicas requests for supplies, food and clothing donations.
Along with Le Chics regular customers, several other organizations are helping at
this event by donating products: Goldwell Cosmetics, Malys Beauty Supplies, Nova
Salon, Sebastian, West Coast Beauty Supplies, and Lunardis.
The purpose of the "Amazing Woman" project is to empower these women and
encourage them to be productive and successful. Lynette Manzanares, a hairdresser at La
Nouvelle Hairdressers in Saratoga, started the "Amazing Woman" project as a
community service effort to help empower women who are re-joining the workforce.
Lynette began this program originally as an assignment for a class she was taking, but
has found that this is her calling: to help people, especially single mothers like
herself. "If it werent for my family, I would have had to live in a shelter
too," says Lynette.
Lynette, with the tremendous support and encouragement from her boss and friend,
Suzannah Salin, owner of La Nouvelle salon, organized "Amazing Womans"
debut salon day in August. Now the tradition is being passed on to Le Chic and from there
to the Andrew James Salon in Cupertino. It is an event Lynette and Suzannah hope can be
passed on to different salons and can occur monthly.
Most of the women referred have been part of ResourceNET, a collaborative
project of InnVision, Second Start, and the Emergency Housing Consortium. ResourceNET is
geared toward helping homeless families, and families at risk of homelessness, who are
receiving TANF. It was set up in response to Santa Clara Countys Welfare-to-Work
program. The goal of ResourceNET is to help families make the transition from
welfare-dependency to employment and independence.
